There&rsquo;s nothing like a good paint job to freshen up the look of your kitchen. Whether the paint on your old fridge is worn and chipping or you&rsquo;re just looking to switch up your style, a fresh coat of paint can completely transform a refrigerator without breaking the bank. Follow these simple steps to make your old fridge look brand new!
Safety First
You&rsquo;ll want to make sure to take proper precautions before you start the painting process. Unplug your fridge from the wall and move it to a well-ventilated area, like a porch or backyard if possible. If you can&rsquo;t get the unit outside, make sure you open up some windows and doors while the job is underway. Wear a face mask while you&rsquo;re painting to avoid inhaling toxic paint fumes.
Decide on a Method
Spray and brush-on paint both have their own benefits and challenges. You can get a beautiful new paint job from either type, but you&rsquo;ll want to consider all the pros and cons before investing in a can. Liquid paint will make less of a mess, and it&rsquo;s a safer bet if you are going to be doing your painting indoors. However, it will also take longer, and brush strokes may be visible once the paint dries. Spray paint, on the other hand, might be faster and have a cleaner finish, but you&rsquo;ll need to take the fridge outside or cover nearby surfaces with plastic.
Prime the Refrigerator
The outside of your fridge will need a deep cleaning before you can start repainting. First, remove or cover up any hardware that might get in the way, like handles or vents. You can paint them separately if they need some sprucing up too. Next, thoroughly clean any dirt and grime from the surface of the fridge, using a solution of ammonia and water or surface cleaner. Sand the whole unit down to get rid of the glossy outer coat of paint and wear down any rust spots, then wipe away any residue with a damp cloth. If your fridge has problems with rust, give it a quick spot treatment with rust protector.

Get Ready to Paint
Whether you&rsquo;re going with a bold color or sticking to a more classic look, you can find specialty paint and appliance epoxy in just about every color. Pick out the color that speaks to you, and go to work. It should only take about two or three coats to get a nice, glossy finish on your refrigerator. Give the paint a few minutes to dry between coats to make sure all the paint goes on evenly. Be sure to carefully follow manufacturer instructions on the can&mdash;many spray paints recommend shaking the can for a full minute before getting started, to make sure the paint mixes properly. Let the refrigerator dry for at least 24 hours before returning it to its original place. Either leave the unit outside, or keep windows open as much as possible until the fumes dissipate.

If you want to increase your refrigerator efficiency, try out some of our favorite tricks and tips that can improve its overall performance:

<h4>Test the temperature </h4>

Make sure to test the temperature of your fridge with a regular thermometer periodically. If it seems too warm, turn up the temperature but know that the temperature can take 24-hours to reach a cooler level.


<h4>Clear the top</h4>


Clean off the top of the refrigerator, leaving it clear of packages, food, or other goods. Storing items on top of the fridge can block heat from escaping, causing your fridge to be less efficient.


<h4>Vacuum the vents and coils</h4>


Vacuum and clean the vents and back of the refrigerator, removing any dust or debris. In addition, clean the coils underneath the grating on the back of the fridge to reach optimal efficiency.


<h4>Turn-off the ice</h4>


If you find that your freezer makes more ice than you can consume - turn off the ice maker! Performing this simple step will increase your refrigerator's efficiency and allow it to focus on keeping your food nice and cold. 


<h4>Test the seal</h4>


Is your refrigerator door closing properly? Check the seal around the door with the tried-and-true paper test: Simply open the refrigerator, place a piece of paper in the open doorway, and close the door. If the paper slides to the floor, the seal needs replacing; if it stands firm, the seal is working fine.


<h4>Pull-away from the wall</h4>


Keep the fridge a few inches away from the wall and other appliances for maximum efficiency. This will increase air-flow, which in turn will increase performance level.


<h4>Use your compartments</h4>


Keep your fridge organized and use the designated compartments as intended. These storage recommendations are based on the layout and temperatures of the areas of a fridge - storing your dairy in the dairy compartment, meat in the meat drawer, and so on can favorably impact efficiency.


<h4>Keep the fridge stocked</h4>


Keep the fridge stocked for insulative properties; it is suggested that you try to keep the fridge at least 2/3 full for best performance and efficiency.

 The refrigerator is a wonderful invention, but it's not a miracle preserver for every type of food. The following food items just don't fit in the fridge and should be kept either on the counter or in the freezer. Some may surprise you, while others you may already know of!

Honey

 Honey is naturally anti-microbial and never goes bad. It does slowly crystallize, cloud up and lose its flavor over time, however. Lower temperatures (i.e. the refrigerator) actually speed up this process.
&nbsp;

Tomatoes


 Tomatoes lose their flavor, get bitter and get mushy when refrigerated. It's OK to preserve the remnants of a sliced tomato in the fridge, but try to use it within a day or two.
&nbsp;

Bread


 The refrigerator actually dehydrates bread rapidly and makes it stale. It's fine to freeze bread, however, as the moisture stays trapped inside.
&nbsp;

Onions

 As with tomatoes, onions will get soggy quickly when stored in a fridge. They also have the added bonus of stinking up the fridge and making every other unsealed item taste like onion. A sliced onion can be preserved in the fridge for a few days, but only inside of a sealed freezer bag.

Apples

 Apples will get mushy in the fridge, but they're an even bigger problem for certain other types of fruits and veggies in the crisper. That's because they emit ethylene gas that will cause some other foods near them to decompose quickly.
&nbsp;

Nutella
 

 The world's favorite sugary spread should never be refrigerated. It will get too hard for a knife to penetrate. Nutella can keep for months at room temperature thanks to the sugar content and coconut oil.

Coffee

 Whether in bean form or ground, coffee will dehydrate quickly when stored in the fridge. Ground coffee will also soak up all sorts of flavors and odors that will make it taste funny when brewed.
