What to dry, and what not to dry? Here’s a look at 5 things that are best left out of your Whirlpool dryer.

Being dry is important.
No matter if it&rsquo;s your laundry, a newly painted bench, or your clothes after getting off a water ride when you still have a whole day left at the amusement park, staying dry is quite important.
And that&rsquo;s why dryers are important. And no matter which Whirlpool dryer you have at home -- Maybe you just purchased Whirlpool&rsquo;s Front Load Electric Dryer &ndash; there are some things you should always remember not to put in your dryer.
We&rsquo;re looking at you Robby: You know why you lost your dryer privileges. Don&rsquo;t be like Robby. Instead, learn from this practical list and keep your dryer happy for years to come.
1. Gum
Gum is great for many things, like chewing, blowing bubbles, or sticking under tables and chairs at the movie theater. It is not great for clothes that are going through the laundry.
It&rsquo;s best practice to go through each pocket of every article of clothing before putting them in the washer or dryer. (Why? Then you won&rsquo;t pull out your FAVORITE PAIR OF PANTS ROBBY, THEY WERE MY FAVORITE PAIR OF PANTS, only to find out that SOMEONE left a pack of gum in them and now that gum has melted and permanently joined, stained, and become one with what used to be your favorite pair of pants.)
2. Sandy things
So, you just returned from a wonderful trip to the beach, and now you have a whole bunch of sandy beach towels. Of course, it just makes sense to throw them in the dryer to shake the extra sand out. Right? Riiiight?
WRONG ROBBY. Sand can really mess up your dryer, so don&rsquo;t do that. No sand in the dryer. None. It can actually get trapped in the inner workings of the dryer, which can do damage to your machine. We don&rsquo;t want that, and you don&rsquo;t want that either.
Also, for a bonus tip: Don&rsquo;t put bathing suits in your Whirlpool dryer either: It will stretch out the fibers. You&rsquo;re welcome.
3. Brassieres
Bras and the heat of the dryer just don&rsquo;t play well together. They aren&rsquo;t friends, they don&rsquo;t call each other back, they don&rsquo;t share LEGOs, they don&rsquo;t play in the sand box, and they totally don&rsquo;t eat at the same lunch table.
If you want to keep buying bras over and over again, sure, throw them in the dryer. If not, stick with hang drying them, which will work toward keeping them alive as long as possible.
4. Rubber-backed bath mats
While they may be great to dry your feet on when you get out of the shower &ndash; and keep you from falling and slipping on the bathroom floor &ndash; rubber-backed bath mats are best left to dry on their own, instead of placing them inside your Whirlpool dryer.
We&rsquo;ve heard some stories. And while they weren&rsquo;t exactly &ldquo;Goosebumps&rdquo; levels of horror, we still wouldn&rsquo;t recommend seeing what happens if you put a bath mat in the dryer.
5. Animals

Come on now. Yes, while this may come as a surprise to some people, but you really shouldn&rsquo;t put your pets in the dryer. No, not even if they are wet, Robby. Dry them off with a towel. Anything but putting them in the dryer.
Now, the internet is mixed on whether it is OK to put plush, stuffed animals in the dryer. Some places say yes, but some say no. Let&rsquo;s just say we wouldn&rsquo;t trust our personal collection of stuffed animals in there. Better safe than sorry when it comes to Mr. Fluffy.

How to Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent can be pricey and harmful to the environment, but is there a better option to get dirt and stains out of your clothes? Turns out, there are plenty of ways to make your own laundry detergent right at home. It&rsquo;s cheap, easy, and it can even be more effective at fighting grime than commercial detergents. Follow these simple recipes to make two homemade detergents at a fraction of the usual cost.
What You&rsquo;ll Need
Making your own detergent only requires a few basic ingredients. They can be found online or in most grocery stores for just a few dollars. Make sure to have these on hand before you get started:
&bull; Borax
&bull; Washing soda
&bull; Bar soap
&bull; 5-gallon bucket
&bull; Jars or old detergent jug
&bull; OPTIONAL: Essential oil
How to Make Liquid Detergent

1. Start by grating your bar of soap using a normal cheese grater or food processor. Be sure to break or cut up the soap first if you&rsquo;re using a food processor, to avoid damaging the machine.
2. Add 4 cups of water to the shredded soap and place in a pot over medium-high heat. Stir for about 10 minutes, until the soap is completely melted.
3. Once the mixture is melted, transfer it into a 5-gallon bucket and add 4.5 gallons of hot water. Mix in 2 cups of Borax and 2 cups of washing soda and stir until the powder is completely dissolved.
4. The detergent will smell naturally soapy and clean, but if you&rsquo;d like to freshen up your clothes with a particular scent, now&rsquo;s the time to add in the essential oil of your choice. Citrus scents like lemon and orange typically work best. You can add as much or as little as you&rsquo;d like, but an ounce of oil is typically all that you&rsquo;ll need.
5. Cover the bucket and let the mixture sit for at least 24 hours to turn into a gel. When it&rsquo;s finished, stir until the mixture is smooth, then transfer into jars or an empty detergent jug. Use &frac12; cup to 1 cup of detergent per load of laundry.

How to Make Powder Detergent
1. Powder detergent is even simpler than liquid detergent. Grate your bar of soap, then blend until finely chopped in a food processor or blender. Coconut oil-based soaps typically work best. Be sure to select a scented soap if you want scented detergent, as it&rsquo;s more difficult to add essential oil to a powdered detergent.
2. Place the blended soap into a large bowl. Add 1 cup of Borax and 1 cup of washing soda and mix together thoroughly.
3. Store the powder in tightly sealed jars, with a small scoop inside. Use 1 or 2 tablespoons of detergent for an average load of laundry, and be sure to pour it into the machine before adding the clothes. Each batch of detergent should wash about 40 loads.
These recipes work for all kinds of washers, and you can even customize the recipes for your needs. If you prefer to do away with harsh chemicals like Borax, just increase the proportion of washing soda. Some DIYers also recommend adding half a cup of vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of the machine, to help dissolve excess detergent, lower pH levels to prevent skin irritation, and keep your clothes soft.

How to Make White Clothes Whiter in a Whirlpool Washing Machine
There&rsquo;s nothing worse than pulling your favorite white clothes out of the laundry, only to find out that the once-brilliant white has faded to look dull and dingy. The good news is that there are ways to reverse the damage and get those white fabrics looking fresh and new. A Whirlpool washing machine is a great place to start &mdash; with tons of unique features that save time, energy, and wear-and-tear on your clothes, you&rsquo;ll get the best whitening results in a Whirlpool. If you want to restore your white clothes&rsquo; natural look without the use of harsh chemicals like bleach, try out these tips for freshening up your fabrics and making white clothes white again.
Baking Soda and Lemon 
Baking soda is the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to household cleaning, and it turns out it&rsquo;s also a powerful, non-toxic bleaching agent. Adding a bit of lemon can also increase your bleaching power. To concoct an effective home bleach recipe, mix about &frac14; cup of baking soda with &frac14; cup of lemon juice. Add the mixture to your washing machine along with your detergent, and your white clothes should come out brighter than ever.
Vinegar
White vinegar can help strip away residue left on your white clothes by soap and detergent, and naturally brighten fabrics. To make a simple vinegar soak for your laundry, fill a big stock pot full of water and mix in a cup of white vinegar. Bring the pot to a boil, then remove from heat. Add in your white clothes and let them soak overnight. The next day, run the clothes through the washer as usual and you should have a much cleaner, fresher-looking result than ever before.
 Laundry Bluing
This unusual product makes your fabrics whiter &mdash; by dying them blue! No, your whites won&rsquo;t come out turquoise, but it does give them a slight undertone of blue, which looks cleaner and brighter to our eyes than dingy-looking shades of yellow. To use bluing liquid in a top-load washer, dilute it in water according to instructions on the packaging, start your wash cycle, and once the barrel is about halfway filled with wash water, add in the solution. For a front-load washer, dilute about &frac14; teaspoon of bluing in 1 or 2 quarts of water, then add it to the dispenser drawer after the machine has filled with water. If your dispenser drawer locks during the wash cycle, just dilute according to the packaging and add as much as you can fit into the drawer before you start the cycle. Don&rsquo;t add any other laundry products besides detergent &mdash; they can make the blue stain!
Whirlpool&rsquo;s Touch Control Functions 
Your Whirlpool washer comes with a variety of options to customize each wash cycle for your laundry&rsquo;s needs. Most Whirlpool machines come with a cycle especially for white fabrics, so they should come out clean and bright every time. You should always wash white clothes in hot water when possible, so select the right temperature and soil settings using your machine&rsquo;s Intuitive Touch Controls. Whirlpool washers also come with Adaptive Wash technology, which helps sense the needs of each individual load and gently flush away soap residue and grime without fading whites and colors.
 Dry in the Sun
It might be tempting to throw your clothes right into your Whirlpool dryer and get the load done quickly, but try drying your whites outside instead. The sun has natural bleaching qualities, which can help give your whites a little extra push if they need it. Hang them in a clean, dry place where there&rsquo;s no risk of stains, and let nature do the work for you.

Keeping white clothes bright can be a challenge. Bleach can be a great refresher to your garments and keep them looking their best. However, you can't use bleach on every type of fabric.

Bleaching Your White Clothes

<ul>
<li>- Make sure to check the care label.</li>
<li>- If it says "no bleach," don't use bleach. </li>
<li>- Test the garment in a hidden spot the first time you use bleach. </li>
<li>- If the item is safe, run it through your wash cycle as normal. </li>
<li>- Add the bleach as instructed by the manufacturer. Many machines have a bleach dispenser or use the detergent dispenser - avoid pouring bleach directly on the clothes. </li>
<li>- Dry as usual. </li>
</ul>

You may want to avoid bleaching your clothes each time you wash, even if they are bleach-safe. Instead, use a bleach alternative in your washing cycle or try a bluing-agent. 

Preventing Your Whites From Fading 

For clothes that cannot be bleached, take some care when washing. Separate your clothes into whites and colors. If you do have to run a load with both whites and colors, use a dye-grabbing cloth that will keep color from setting on your whites. 

Attack stains as quick as possible. Don't forget to work on things you can't see, such as sweat marks on the collar or underarms. You can also rub a full-strength detergent on the area before washing - just give it 15 minutes or so before tossing it in the wash. 

Always follow the instructions on the detergent bottle. Using too much or too little detergent prevents clothes from getting cleaned. Buy a high-quality detergent. Don't overload the washer. It needs to circulate the clothes to get them really clean. When drying clothes, follow the label for the right temperature. Over-drying will fade your clothes, too. 

Take extra care with your laundry and your clothes will last longer and look better.
